THe best defence is offence as the saying goes.this means you have got to know your global competitors, their core competancies and more importantly their limitations.

China can kick a.ss in terms of costs, but often their leadtimes for delivery will make people ignore them as they deliver to late..understanding this is critical to success competing against them, more importantly, educating your customers to understanding this and building grass roots relationships with your clients will empower you further.

If you can utilise the buying power of China and start bulk buying products from China (and the other countries such as India) and then just marking them up and selling them on, you are playing the global game better than the competition.

The other factor, is understand the complex export and import taxation rules, and attacking the foreign markets; this is usually done to setting up distibution alliances with similar companies in the target markets and countries.

This is a massive subject and I could write an entire thesis on it all.which I will not be doing today!!
