On the offchance that this isn't just a humorous phrase, I think the real question is where would he be looking back from. His invention has revolutionised the way we drive in everyday life. It may have catapulted him to enormous wealth, on the other hand a mirror stuck to the windscreen of a car is hardly the greatest invention of the 20th Century.
Maybe he's looked back on the days when there were no rear view mirrors and thought: "If only I hadn't invented rear view mirrors, I wouldn't be the subject of such poor jokes as the above."
