In New York State, are spouses responsible by law to pay debts of spouse?

I was told by a New York State collection agency that I am responsible for my husband's credit card debts.

Answer:
New York is not a community property state. The only way you are responsble for his debt is if you are a signer on the account.
I don't think the state matters in this case, in many instances with CC debt, the spouse is responsible for the portion of the debt that was acquired during the marriage if the other spouse does not pay. It is usually in the fine print of the credit card agreement that the user's spouse can be held liable for debt.
Good. Now quit whining out it and pay it off.
