Meaning of "mise en demeure"?

Answer:
In France when one party in a contract thinks the other party doesn't follow its obligations the first step to tale is a "mise en demeure".
This is a letter send by party one to party two reminding him of his obligations and threatening to start legal action.

I believe it is an official letter or writ sent to someone ordering them to discharge a responsibilty, meet a contractual agreement or pay an amount of money according to certain stipulations and within a certain time - it's a last chance to carry out what you should have done before the matter goes to court.
