Why do most companies treat interview candidates so poorly?

I had three Interviews for a Accounting Supervisor position at a start-up company. They asked for references and said that I was the final candidate.

They said that they would provide me with an answer last Wednesday as whether or not I was hired.

I did not hear anything last Wednesday, so I called and left messages on Thursday and Friday. I also sent an e-mail to the H/R Representative on Friday. I left messages for the H/R Rep, H/R Director and Controller.

I talked to the H/R Rep yesterday and he said he would call me back tomorrow. I did not hear anything so I called back today.

Now, I receive an e-mail from the H/R Director saying that they have decided to go with another candidate.

I called and left her a message saying I was disappointed and felt that thye did not handle the process appropriately. They could have at least provided me with a status last Wed. They were busy with sales force hiring .

Anyone else go through this?
