What is the penalty for opening mail that is not addressed to you?
Answer:
Yes, It is called invasion of privacy and also is a federal offense for messing with someones mail. I would not recommend that. That is a felony. You can get some jail time for that one along with a hefty fine. About 5 years or more in prison. Pending on how serious it is and how many counts they get you for. It would not be very pretty. Best thing to do is put return mail to sender on the outside of the envelope or delivered to wrong address and stick it back in your mail box! That way the post man/woman can make the correction of delivering to the right address. They will eventually take note of the mistake. I know I would hate for someone to read my mail! wouldn't you? Just stick to the right thing and save your self the trouble.
No. It is not legal.
Check the USPS web site for more details.
last i heard it was a federal offence
Well if you read the little warning on the envelopes of some Junk mail (Ironically) it is 5 years in prison.
I'm from Australia & I just moved into a new house, mail gets sent all the time from the people that useto live in the house. My dad useto write on it, re-driect, or something like that, then put it back in the post-box. They still are sending it after months of sending back, so now we just open them incase there is money or something in side.:D
But I think it is illegal yes.
