most people don't need more than $40.00 at any given time. when it comes to purchases above that amount, it makes sense to use your card or a check so that you have a secondary record of your purchase besides the reciept.

20.00 in NYC is the perfect amount it will buy you lunch or a CD, a cool belt, or anything from a street vender. It will also appease a mugger if you get mugged and you don't lose out on that much.

If you are at home, going to work, what do you need cash for? Lunch, some gasoline or bus money. Maybe something for a beer after work. If you're a girl you don't have to take cash for that
If you are traveling away from home, you might need considerably more.
