Have you ever paid a professional to improve your resume...Was it worth it?
Answers:
(I'm going to go ahead and state my bias up front. I am a professional resume writer. My opinion is obviously influenced by my profession.)
Doing it yourself is certainly not your best bet. You can cut your hair, represent yourself in court, or even remove your own tonsils, but my guess is that you would have professionals take care of those things for you.
But to answer your question...a reasonable price depends on the quality of the writer. You can find someone to write your resume for $25. Those people are usually secretaries who know how to use MS Word. In my experience, a reasonable price for a top-quality writer is usually $100-$175. A cover letter should cost an additional $50-$100. It's like anything else: you get what you pay for.
You can always find professionals who will write your resume for less than this at a freelance website. Sites like Elance and Guru would be free for you. Freelancers bid on your resume, and you select the one that you want. You'll get more bids on Guru.com, but Elance.com has more qualified writers.
Your best bet is to do it yourself. Check for spelling and grammar. There are great sections of monster.com and careerbuilder.com as well.
It you pay someone it will be several hundered dollars.
