With all the news lately about tainted products being imported from other countries, China in particular, I am going to make an effort to buy American made products that have to pass FDA safety standards. How do I know which companies use imports from other countries to make their products? How can you be sure when the label says "American made" that it is purely American made and nothing is imported? If a company uses ingredients from other countries to make a product, but manufactures the product in the U.S, do they have to state that on the packaging?
How safe do you feel buying foriegn products with the discovery of so many tainted, unsafe imports lately?
Answers:
Buy your food fresh from local growers. Go to a local butcher or meat processing house that will sell to the public. Call them and ask if they import their meat or get it from locals. Don't buy processed foods. Processed foods were developed to save time but you can still make the same dishes from scratch. This way you aren't exposed to foreign elements, chemicals for shelf life, etc. Start your own garden. It is really hard to trace what is imported today but if you start with fresh local ingredients you will be a step ahead.
Look at their company info. If they have low paid workers or even illegals on their staff, then it is American Made. If they only have Expensive staff, then it must be foreign, and probably chinese. (The good side is, if it is pork, then at least there wont be Human DNA in it, like is possible from US sources).
