Using a credit or debit card?

is it safe to use a credit or debit card online? if you give your account number to someone online for a puchase, cant they use your number again, if they wanted too??(without your permission) how can you make sure this doesnt happen? i recently bought something online,(a sample ) & the person said they were going to bill my card again for the intire purchase, but i wrote & told them i wasnt interested in that, now im worried..what should i do....

Answer:
The difference in using a credit card and debit card online is the recourse that you have if they overcharge you. (Like what you are expecting to happen.) When a vendor takes money from your debit card, it is directly coming from your checking account, so you don't have much recourse. It is lost money, so a pre-emptive call to your bank would be good to cancel any more transactions with this company. On a credit card purchase, you can dispute the charges with your credit card company, and they will sometimes just take it off your bill. But you should go to the original company and tell them firmly and in writing that you did not want any more products or charges to your account. Keep a copy, and tell your bank/credit card co. about this. Prevention is better than trying to track down your money.
yes you should!
By law they prob. still can charge it. When you bought your sample you should have noticed if there was some small print. That is how they trick people into things.
I only use my credit card online at reputable websites
Also only use the card on a site that has a padlock on the name bar that means it is a secure site. I would call the bank and let them know that you are being billed more then you should be. Just keep a close eye on your statements for a while and consider placing a stop payment
I purchase a lot of things on line, and I pay some of my bills like cable, and cell bill online, Just make sure the sites you go to have that little lock emblem at the bottom of the screen that says this is a secure website.. make sure you keep track of all your banking statements and notify your bank if you see a fishy transaction that you didnt do....just stay with reputable websites and you'll be fine...
Yes it is. Just look for sights that have the padlock. If it doesn't have a padlock, then the sight isn't a legitimate sight.
If it was me, I would contact the bank or whomever issues the card of the situation and find out if I could do a charge back or hold on the additional charges. Make copies of any email communications and make sure you copy/paste their on-line page in case it changes.
Under Federal Law you can dispute fishy Credit Card charges.
