Retailers please answer this question?
Answers:
No, you are not being at all unreasonable. Many restaurants have portable units for processing credit cards now, so the wait staff can process cards at the table. Other retail stores generally have their credit card processing equipment by the cash registers, which means they can process your card without it leaving your sight. If a restaurant doesn't have this feature, then I ask that a manager process my transaction. I do this because I had a waitress take my card number once, and try to purchase a $500.00 visa gift card with it. True, a manager can steal too, but they're generally a bit more invested in their jobs than are the wait staff.
Next time, maybe you could explain to the sales clerk WHY you don't like your card out of your sight. If you let them know you're concerned about identity theft and that you not losing sight of your card is for their protection too. After all, if someone takes your number, and they've had your card out of your sight, they become a suspect.
Good Luck!
Restaurants often have the terminals at the counter, so they will have to take the card to the terminal to process it. There are portable terminals now, though, so you should ask before you present your card if they have one or not.
If they don't, then you will have to take the card to the counter yourself to pay your bill, and in that way, it should not be out of your sight.
No, you're not being in the least little bit unreasonable. You're well within your rights.
