You didn't specify the account, so I'm going to assume it's been sent to a collector.
You can have it removed almost immediately by having, in writing from the collector, an agreement that upon payment of the 400 dollars, the debt shall be erased from all the credit reporting agencies and that the debt was satisfied.
It will take 30 - 45 days for it to be reflected, however.
it depends on the agency that it is with (if its in collections) but it usually takes about 30 - 60 days. you can go to www.annualcreditreports.com after you paid it and dispute that you paid it before it went to collections that usually makes it go faster. It may even be removed all together
Make sure you get the committment IN writing that they will remove
"ANY AND ALL NEGATIVE REFERENCES FROM ALL CREDIT REPORTS WITHIN NO MORE THAN 30 DAYS OF YOUR PAYMENT"
Better yet, construct the letter yourself and have them sign it and return it to you, copied onto their letterhead.
