Annual credit report says I have a morgage!?
Answer:
Your ex may be lying to you.
You need to get a better idea of what your report says you had.
Get that copy of the report and find out who reported the mortgage. Then call them and ask them what record they have of you having a mortgage with them.
This could also be a case of identity theft where a person used your name and personal financial details to try to get a mortgage in your name..it's unlikely because the person lived there and could easily be found if caught.
And..if the mortgage was paid satisfactorally.it actually may have helped your credit score. But, even if it did, you should work to get that cleared.
If the mortgage was in your name, your ex may have forged your signature in order to get the loan, which is a crime.however the statute of limitations has run out and he can't be charged with it.
You should be able to get data on who reported the mortgage online immediately by going on the website of one of the three credit reporting agencies. Once you get the name of the mortgage company, contact them right away and tell them you wish to complain about a possible fraudulent mortgage.
Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com. to get reports from all the agencies. (This is the only truly free place to get these.)
See if the other agencies also report this. If so, you've got some legal issues here and should consult an attorney.
You should be able to dispute the report online, also you can click on the negative item and it will give you a name and address of the creditor. Contact them AND Equifax to get it removed.
Do a yahoo or google search and find an address and phone number for the company the "mortgage" is through. Call them immediately and request additional information. Is it deliquent? If it is under your name ask how to get it out of your name. Good luck and don't put this off any longer.
First of all, is Equifax reporting that you have a mortgage from 2000 until now or just had a morgage in the year 2000? Did you and your Ex ever have a mortgage together on or around the same time you were separated? Sounds like you've put your Ex in question here. One main complaint made more often than not by divorced couples is this."the court said he/she is responsible, I'm not, so why is it negatively affecting my credit?" What is most misunderstood is that it doesn't matter who is responsible for the asset/house, until it is refinanced, both parties still have the legal obligation to make payments. Sounds like your husband may have lied to you. But to be on the safe side I would check all three credit reporting agencies and see if they conincide with one another.
