Collections departments can take you to court for any amount of a bill. They don't really concern themselves with the cost, as if they win, you will be liable for court costs as well. You'd be best advised to try and work out some payment arrangement with them so that it doesn't effect your credit.

Now to answer your question. Any amount they want to. Because if they win and they normally do, you will be liable for all of the cost including court and lawyers.
