Bear in mind that companies like these have several departments who do not seem to communicate with each other.
Keep all the details (times and names and what was said) and have a word with a journalist or two. Going to the press is a good way to force these companies to sort themselves out.
call your county bar association. They should be able to help you out.

it used to be like this...when you die your debts die with you,but not anymore,when my mother died she owed loads on hire purchases,we told them she had died but they still wanted there money,so we had to pay them off before they took us to court,they are so heartless as long as they are getting there money they arnt bothered
If she was truly indigent there are no assets in the estate. Unless there was a co-signer I don't see who they could collect from.
Is there anything of value in the estate? If not, tell them to sue your friend.
