Can creditors freeze checking accounts when shared with unrelated person?

I share a checking account with a friend and am being threatened with freeze on checking from creditor

Answer:
Edward is right. In fact, for them to threaten this may be illegal where you live. Check out the laws in your area. Unless they have a judgment AND a court order, they can't touch any of your accounts, freeze or seize.

There's some great info on dealing with creditors and what they can/cannot do at the link below. Check it out.
Not in US! Not by creditors!

Only the government, IRS, can do that.
Have them BACK up their THREATS with FACTS. Make sure it is in WRITING!

I am sure they would have to SUE you in a court of law in order to do this.

Change checking accounts and/or banks. That way they don't have access to your private account information (routing numbers & account numbers).

DO NOT PAY THAT PARTICULAR COMPANY WITH ONE OF YOUR CHECKS. Use money orders, pay online or cashiers check!
They can obtain a judgement agaist the person who owes the money to them in a court of law and then they can gain permission to levy any bank accounts that the person who owes them is a signer on. I work for a large financial institution and I have dealt with similar situtions several times. You're best bet is to remove your name and funds from the account or close the account all together.
If it is not the Government (IRS, SSI or such) they can't touch your account. Those are just empty threats. Tell them to buzz of with this foolishness
Sarah is correct.but depends on state laws.

It would be safer if you got your name removed from the account. Deposit money into it through her, and you could continue to write checks off it.
Go in to the bank and ask you name to be removed. Tell them you want to open up your own account that usually help. Get your money out before you do this.
