At first I thought it was strange that you got denied for the Old Navy card (ONC) if you are a Gap Card holder, but since you applied for both them with 10 minutes, I'm sure it was to prevent identity theft/fraud like someone else said.

I work at Old Navy and have opened many ONCs for Gap card holders - customers can hold cards at all 3 Gap Inc brands (Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic), and you can use them interchangeably at those stores. Customers often have more than 1 brand credit card to take advantage of the savings when you are approved.

You should call 1-877-ACCOUNT and discuss your matter with a customer service rep for the ONC. Maybe there is a certain amount of time that must pass between applying for both credit cards. You should be glad that you got denied for the ONC only for your safety - if someone really was trying to open cards in your name, you'd probably be mad that the company didnt attempt to stop them.
no thery are not, they are both clothes yes but totally different company.
Typically if you apply one right after the other with the same company, they won't approve the second one. However if I recall correctly, you can still use the GAP card at Old Navy stores since, as you said, they're the same company.
ummm that's why...you use your gap card at old navy.

you just tried to open the same damn card. if you were trying to get the discount you probably still will
I have an Old Navy card, and it says that I can use it at Gap, and Banana Republic, as well as Old Navy. So I'm guessing it's owned by the same people?
No they aren't the same company. And you could have been denied also because if you got the gap card before applying for the old navy card- some companies will not let you open a card with them if you have so many ( say 2 or 3) existing open credit cards. They may have seen when you applied for the 2nd card that you were just recently granted a credit card- they may not allow it because of the fact they are afraid you will rack up the charges on all of the other cards also and not pay them. Ya know what I mean?
Well from what it looks like, you're better off anyway becuase you can use the GAP card at Old Navy anyway, I found this information from the website
Yes, they are owned by the same company. They are a tri-brand company, of Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic.

Here's an old press release regarding Gap credit being used at all 3 stores.

http://www.gapinc.com/public/media/press...

Look on the back of the card and see if all 3 logo's appear on the back, or call the number to confirm that you can use one card at all 3 locations.
When it comes to credit, it doesn't all fall on credit score. Other factors could be income, number of credits issued in your name, debt (you're paying the amt due but still owe a lot). They might have turned you down because of any of these.

Also, maybe they're pushing the Gap. j/k

But if you applied right after the other, it could have been denied because it came up as a fraud warning. I used to work for a company that handled credit cards for Victoria Secret, Lerner, Express, Structure, ect. and there would be people applying for a card that would have otherwise gotten it had they not just opened another card. It is set up to prevent identity theft so someone can't go out and get a bunch of cards in your name and to prevent people from getting over their heads.
