Someone used my credit to rent an apartment..is that common?
Is this something common?
Answer:
Contact the Credit Reporting Agencies and contact your local authorities. You should do this before the people living there decide to move.
You Were Subject To Identity Theft.
People are under the wrong assumption that identity theft is defined by the victim suffering some financial loss. This is not the case at all. What happened to you is serious crime and can escalate if you do not contact authorities promptly.
You need to get to bottom of this. Below I've pasted the New York State statue, this may differ slightly for your state.
I don't think it is common, but unless it is a very close friend to whom you gave permission, it is not very nice. Of course if one day the rent is not paid, the landlord might ask you for it. That is not honest to take someone else's credit to rent an appartment or buy anything. If you gave permission of course, that's the consequences of a decision you took.
Goof luck
