Using American Express card without using it!?
I want to get points for using my american express. What are the ways around it so that I can still use the american express to get points. For example, I was thinking to buy travelers checks with my amex card, but they won't allow that. Buy a visa check card, etc.
any ideas?

I think you're stuck. I have shunned American Express cards because (a) they aren't free, and (b) merchants don't like them because their fees are higher than MC or Visa. There are plenty of MC/Visa cards with kickback programs, and if I were you, I'd dump Amex and go to one of them.
it seems silly but try to buy a visa/mc gift card and try to use that
take out a cash advance with your amex and use the cash to buy the item.
Pay with a Visa, then pay your visa with your amex. Then pay your amex with your visa and pay your visa with your amex again. (double points!!)
Try to buy a visa gift card using your AE card.
