Depends where you are in Europe. I use Mastercard (known as "Eurocard" in Europe) with no problems most places in northern Europe. But when I visit Bavaria, it's Visa-only to places I've been. Amex is o.k., but Visa or MC are a better bets. I have one brand through my bank for debit/cash, and the other brand as a credit card, try to keep everything on one card, but with both major brankds, I'm covered just in case. Choose based on lowest fees and interest rate that you can get.
Visa seems best bet
visa and mastercard are both good cards that are well accepted however it can cost you to use both of these since at 18 you wouldnt have enough of a credit score to get the better cards. your best bet is to buy simons mall visa cards which you prepay but get the security of a credit card. these are available at www.simonsmalls.com and are great for traveling.
