Do Credit Counselors Really Help?

I'm not talking about consolidation companies. I'm talking about the people who investigate your report and look for discrepancies and what not. I mean do they typically work as far as raising your score? what do they cost?

Answers:
Beware of companies that promise to help you re-establish your credit for a fee. Their ability to change the information that appears in your credit file is no different than anyone else! Only your creditors are able to alter this information. Therefore you do not need to pay a third party to obtain, discuss, review or make changes to your credit report. You have the right to access your information and make changes to your file if there is an inaccuracy or if you want to include a comment.
You don't need a counselor. You need to get a copy of your report (free once per year) and determine if there are any inaccuracies. You can correct inaccuracies yourself.

Go to the Federal Trade Commission's website and order the report from all 3 bureaus. Again, it's free. Read it and determine what action steps are next. [www.ftc.gov]
