Can a financial insitution put a derogory statement in your credit files?

Yes, if it's true! They don't put "statements" as such (although you can) but any correct adverse information such as late payments, chargeoffs, etc would stand on their own merit and would certainly be derogatory.

but I do know they can only tell the truth about their experiences with you and only in professional language.
Yes they can, especially if you have been blacklisted
Yes, if you miss payments they are permitted to record that.
Obviously they can't make any personal comments!!
