My son obtained his credit report from Experian. It's listing one potentially negative item. He rented a home with two other people. It was a verbal agreement between the three of them. He never signed a lease( out of town at the time) and a copy of the lease was not given to any of the tenants. The responsibility on the credit report for this negative item is listed as "joint". This entire situation was due to the one guy not paying his portion of the rent & deposit. This guy up and moved out. Is there anything my son can do as he actually never signed the lease and never spoke to the landlord personally until a few months after living there when the landlord was trying to take them to court over the situation. It never went to court and we ended up paying this guys portion of the deposit and rent. But this is still listed as "date resolved" "NA"
Answers:
Contact Esperian and dispute the item in writing. Submit COPIES of any documentation that you paid the landlord. Ask for any proof a court handed down a judgment against your son or any proof of a debt owed or overdue to this person. Demand that the item be removed now. Contact the other two credit reporters and do the same if needed.
You shouldn't need to go to court.
