I like using Citibank Mastercard for American Airlines miles.
It all depends on what you are trying to save miles for. It seems every card company has a program that gets you points. If the credit card is a bank credit card and not attached to something else (like American Airlines, United, etc) then all the points can be used for anything you want.
My rewards program allows me to redeem points for cash, airline tickets (no black out dates), TVs, gift cards, and tons more. This is not a Capital One credit card.
Typically you earn 1 point for every dollar your spend. You may find another program that gives cash back. Just contact a couple of credit card companies and ask about their rewards programs. You may also be able to research them online.
To quickly determine which credit card will pay you the most rewards (cashback or other) for your spending profile, you can use this rewards calculator:

A few of the better cards (for most peoples' spending profile) tend to be: AmEx Blue Cash, Citi Driver's Edge, and Chase Freedom. You can compare them using that calculator tool.
