How do you know if an ATM card my be used as a credit card?

If the card is a debit card with a VISA logo on it, you may only use it as a credit card online, or in stores that automatically scan cards (whether its a debit or a credit card) as credit.
Does it have a Visa (or Mastercard) symbol on it? I think that is what you would look for.
If it's a debit card, then yes.

Like the rest of the responses, if it has a VISA or Mastercard logo then you can use it basically anywhere. But remember that unlike "real" credit cards that take your bill about twenty days to arrive, this one will cash a couple of days afterwards. Also, if you haven't got funds in your checking acct., and have no overdraft transfer protection from a savings, you won't be able to run it as credit until you pay a fine, and the money it was processed/charged for.
You can tell the Merchant to use Credit for your purchase, but if the amount exceeds the Balance in your account, it may not clear the purchase or be approved, I do it all time as Credit purchase, the reason, if I use as Debit, the bank charges me a $1.50 fee, if Credit, there is no fee or the Merchant pays it.
In the U.S. and some other countries if it has Visa or MasterCard symbol it will work online like a credit card.
Some Other countries do allow their ATM cards to be used online.
Maestro, Visa Electron, Visa Delta, Solo, Switch, Etc your bank must support it and on the web you do not enter your pin for those type of cards.
