New credit file is it legal?
Answers:
It is illegal, and you can be prosecuted if you are found to have obtained a new tax id only for the purpose of getting a new credit file.
Sorry. It's illegal for that purpose. Don't do it because sooner or later it will catch up to you, and probably when you least expect it.
Do the right thing and clean up your credit report the legitimate way.

I believe it is being investigated. Regardless a mortgage company will pull your credit with your social security number. It is kind of pointless to do and you may be tried for fraud. It should be illegal. I would definitely avoid doing that.
Its called Identity Fraud. The 9 digit number in question would be a social security number. The only time you can legally get a new social security number is if Social Security messes up and gives your number to someone else.

Sorry but it's illegal.
According to the 2007 edition of the Consumer Action Handbook and I quote "It is a Federal crime to make false statements on a loan or credit application, to give a false S.S.N., or to obtain a Employer Identification Number from the I.R.S. under false pretences".
