Do ethics really exist in the corporate world?
Answers:
Corporations have made it their mission to practice ethics in this day and age. The commitment to ISO programs is a good example...although I believe that most cases are little to do with ethics and more to do with marketing and the ability to compete in certain markets that will only deal with those companies ISO certified. The laws also ensure that certain standards are maintained with respect to quality and employment standards. So whether it is their choice or not, I do believe that corporations do what they can to demonstrate certain levels of ethics.
Where this breaks down is in their choices with respect to profitability. For financial reasons, companies may decide to layoff large numbers of workers and outsource some departments or functions. This is often deemed as unethical. But it makes the most business sense from a profitability standpoint.
Of course. Ethics can be a great marketing tool for companies that want to attract more customers. McDonald's is a great example. McDonald's recently changed their menu's when the community became concerned about 'Healthy living'.
However it is really the responsibility of the company, the directors and the employees to enforce their ethics and corporate governance policies. Australian Wheat Board Ltd sold wheat to Saddam before the Iraqi invasion. They bribed Saddam with hundreds of millions of dollars to secure their contract.
Yes.
Ethics exist in name only. I've worked for two major corporations in my life and I can tell you that they "say" they practice ethics but do what they can to make a quick and easy buck.
