How can you determine whether or not the anticipated benefits were realized when two companies merge?

Answer:
Benefits are realized when the market realizes them. The end result is increased profits, possibly reflected in the stock price, and hopefully, increased efficiency in which products or services are offerred.
It could be a good thing or a bad thing too. When AT&T merged with Cingular, over 2 years, they lost 70% of customers according to Verizon Wireless. They had over 4 mil customers at the merge, but year later; they had only 1 mil left due to lousy services they provided to previous AT&T customers.
you will not know for a year or two
It all depends on whether one the companies got pregnant from the merger, and whether you consider that a benefit.
If a few hundred people had to go home one day and tell their spouse and family that they just lost their job, that's usually where the anticipated benefits come from.
