How do you handle a toxic work environment?
The atmosphere is toxic at best. The company president screams/yells etc. at me (and all others) every interaction. He never uses swear words or physically threatens anyone, but he is condecending and rude. Yesterday he got in a shouting match with a coworker and I thought he was going to hit him.
Half of us want to quit, and I am looking for another job hard. How do I handle it in the meantime?
Answers:
I worked for a newspaper liked this and it's very dysfunctional.
Just make sure that your interaction is appropriate and professional at all times. I read a book about this once and it said that to guard against unreasonable people you have to be the most reasonable. If someone is shouting at you, lower your voice. Supposedly they will follow suit and calm down.
I found that to be true part of the time. Just know that it's not about you and that you have no control and can't change anything so just try to handle it the best way that you can until you get another job.
Also, you might try talking to your boss in as non-threatening way as possible about how his yelling affects you. Sometimes this works.
Just know you're leaving and get out of there. When you work for a small company and the tyrant is the boss, there's little you can do (other than go to therapy and sue). In a large company, you can complain to higher-ups.
Your health is the most important thing. Run, run, run.
I'm sure there is unemployment compensation in your area, and call the Health Department or the Police or someone and report this. Or just keep going and take you fate.
