Where do the CEOs and company presidents start their careers?

The successful ceo's and company presidents that run some of americas most successful businesses had to start somewhere, what did they do? Just start at the bottom of company and work their way up i guess. can anybody help me out?

Answers:
If you are talking about a large company - you need to start with good education. Most CEO's of large corporations have big name schools on their resumes.

Then after the education, you can't be afraid to move around from job to job. And relocate, if necessary. You shouldn't do this excessively, but just staying at one place your whole career will usually hurt you, not help you.
some worked their way up, others had well-connected families who helped them move a bit faster. regardless, unless you're Carly Fiorina, education is the most important factor IMO.
A nice few CEO's and company presidents have worked their way up the ladder. A few were appointed when the company was created by the owner who appointed himself or herself as president. If you start at the bottom of the company and work your way up, it could mainly take years to get to a CEO or presidents position. If you have a background in business and then can achieve the goals faster than starting out at the bottom.
