What Happened to Meier and Frank?

I know Macy took over in Portland Oregon area, but why? I remember when I was a kid we always attended the Meier and Frank Parade at Christmas. There was Breakfast with Santa at the store downtown. Why did it have to end? Did someone retire, or was it a hostile takeover?

Answers:
The "Meier & Frank" (M&F) store that you grew up with and loved so well was originally independent. However, it was bought in 1966 by May. May kept the M&F name and operated independently (inside Mays) until 2003. Then it operated with the Robinsons-May division.

Federated then made a friendly bid for May in February 2005. Under the terms of the agreement:

Federated would keep M&F name for the short-term, but transition toward the single Macy's masthead for its general mass-market department stores nationwide.
