What is emerging technology?

Answers:
I am not an expert, although I have studied Electronics Engineering Technology in the past... Emerging technology is almost any technology that is predicted will happen soon, like within the next 3 to 6 months, but, for whatever reason isn't quite 'finished yet', (due to standards still being formalized, applications for patent or license or approvals process is not completed yet.)

For example, HDTV and Wi-Fi are now today's technology, whereas about 2-3 years ago, they were still emerging. It took more time for the proper protocols to finally be approved and standardized. HDTV/ATSC has 13 different standards at least.. But, these 13 or so are the commonly used and accepted standards. Wi-Fi is now up to a '3rd-generation standard' (I.e. 802.11a, 11b, and now 11g).. but more 'emerging wi-fi technologies' are in the works, like Wi-Max, 802.11n, and others. A year or so from now, these will be the new standards in use, and taken for granted by the everyday consumer who buys a wireless router in 2008 will get the new standard, probably without even realizing the advantage/disadvantage of the different protocol standards.

Hope this helps!
sort of like the hybrids- they are the new or emerging (coming out)
