In your opinion, what are the benefits of being a salaried vs. hourly employee?
Answers:
How is he cracking down?
I prefer to be hourly so that I get paid for overtime, have mandatory lunch periods and the options for breaks. Also, I don't feel as though I always have to make myself available.
Of course salary staff can work those 15 extra minutes to finish a job without having to get overtime approved. And they can go home early/come in late without financial impact if the workload is low.
Benefits to the employer or to the employee, it makes a difference.
at my old job salaried employees got "sick pay" (5 days of sick time, not vacation) but the hourly employees did not.
There are legal differences as well as differences in how the company uses salaried (exempt) employees vs. hourly (non-exempt) employees. The biggest difference is payment of overtime for hourly employees but not for most salaried. An exempt employee cannot be docked for working less than forty hours (or whatever the company's regular week is) but does not get paid extra for working more. A non-exempt employee gets paid only for hours worked, plus time and a half for hours over 40 per week (and in CA, for hours over 8 per day in most jobs.) Email me here if you would like to talk about other differences, I'd be happy to tell you what I can.
