I want to establish a domain name. What is the difference between .com or .org?

Hi, the domain name I wanted to use is unavailable under .com, it is available for .org. Is there any difference between the 2?
Thanks for all your replies.

Answers:
While anyone can register a .ORG domain, I wouldn't unless it is a noncommercial site, like a charity or nonprofit, because that is its intent and people think of .ORG domains that way.

I would try to find another .COM name that is available. Most people will try .COM if they can remember the website name but aren't sure of the domain. Sometimes people don't even pay attention to the domain because the assume it's .COM. You run the risk of driving traffic to your competition, who already has the .COM, if you use a different domain.
You have to be a non-profit organization to use the .org designation.
.COM connotes commercial site hence most businesses use .com in their domain name

.ORG is typically a non profit organization such as Wikipedia.org, Heritage.org, PETA.org among others
.org usually means Organization.. such as pta.org, pwsausa.org ..

you could use the designation for your country.
The distinctions are non-relevant today.

It's generally advisable only to go with a dot com, and to buy the .net and .org if you can as well. Many non-tech savvy people don't know what the heck a dot org is and may even think it's one of those hackers sites. The dot com connotation has just become so synonomous with web sites today it's poor judgment to go with anything else.
