What is your opinioin of WalMart now?
Workers were not always paid for the extra time they worked
The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, has been ordered to pay at least $78m (£42m) in compensation to workers who were forced to work during breaks.
A jury in a Pennsylvania court decided that Wal-Mart broke a state law by refusing to pay staff for the extra work they did.

Answer:
Labor law states you have to be paid for time worked . In the olden days Wal-Mart and others had employees competing against one another and the way to get ahead was to do extra work after hours and not get paid. Sooner or later someone else does more and another does more. Where does that end. You begin actually working for 1/3 of the wage you should be getting per hour in the first place.
a drain on society
I don't care, I'll still shop there. I just won't work there.
It's a cheep place and nothing great.
SO? WALMART EMPLOYS THOUSAND OF OTHERWISE UNEMPLOYABLE PEOPLE. AT LEAST THEY CAN GET A JOB WITH A 7TH. GRADE EDUCATION....
I'm disappointed with the store chain . I've noticed years ago, when Sam Walton died, Wal-Mart wasted no time going import on the products .
well i think it is STUPID they have no nice workers and they dont know how to work the place right.
I hate the long lines due to sort staff, plus I really dont a retarded cashier, because they always fuckk up.
I unapologetically support Wal-Mart. People who are handed a worthless diploma from our government owned, liberal teacher union controlled schools have to get a job somewhere.
.
I hate Wal-Mart. Go to http://www.walmartwatch.com
lol. if you say the word "union" in that store, see what will happen next. that's why you don't work there.
Walmart rules in my city
Its like a freakin Cult
We have no choice but to shop there
they are everywhere !
WalMart? I give it a C-. The shoes are okay, but the clothes are just icky. Personally, I'd hate to work at WalMart, but if I was desperate enough I would. And $78? That's perfect. WalMart needs to treat their workers with more respect fpr all the hard work. Thank God for that jury!
It is o.k. but you don't get all the things you want. So you should try Target if you don't like WalMart.
I shop at Target but own Walmart stocks why? because the lines in walmart are too long while the lines at target are a lot shorter and I don't have to deal with all those people.
WAKE UP.
This isn't just walmart. THere are hospitals and other companies that have been sued for the same thing.
WalMart is phrone to those kinds of lawsuits, being such a huge company and having such labour policies. Take a look at Microsoft, McDonalds, their the target of anti-thrust action, simply because they're very dominant in their market niche.
My opinion of Walmart is the same as it was, it destroys some of the social fabric of neighbourhoods where it installs herself. And jobs it offers are very badly paid and underskilled.
All minimun wage paying jobs do the same, I can tell you If your company ensures employees take their breaks on time, it becomes non-profitable and a hassle for everyone including the employee, YEAH the employee, they dont want the breaks 90% of the time they only care for the meal break, the other 10 min breaks they rather get more stuff done to go home early, or, just not to get bored.
If the employer doesnt ansure employees take all breaks, everyone is hapy untill some manager screws up and makes the employees mad, then they go see a lawyer and the lawyer simply identifies opportunities, wich usually is the same: labor law violations.
Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap.
That's when you get when workers don't unite to fight for what they deserve.
The fat cats take all the cream off the top and leave the crumbs.
This is what Walmart - and our stupid city 'fathers' - have done to our downtown:
First the city let Walmart build a large store on the east side of town.
The downtown area took a deep dive.
Walmart asked to build another store, this time on the west side of town, about a mile and a half from downtown.
The city 'fathers' let them!
And now our downtown is totally dead. Except on weekends when all the university students go to the clubs down there and at the east end of the main street - which used to be one of our province's most beautiful and vibrant streets - all the prostitutes congregate. The cops are downtown in droves, every weekend.
Walmart has this city in a pincers grip. Nobody will go downtown and pay for parking - the city has raised the rates several times since Walmart opened the new store - you'd think they're in cahoots. They can go to Walmart and get free parking and take all the time they want to buy cheap stuff that is overpriced as it is. Have you seen the stitching? Have you smelled the fabrics?
As for the employees: All those people who work there may have poor prospects for elsewhere, that still is no reason to abuse them. Walmart seems to operate just on the line, as far as labor law is concerned. Those employees are intimidated into working extra hours because they know that they are expendable and they want to keep their jobs.
Nobody deserves to be harassed like that! I say stick it to Walmart to the full extent of the law.
