How secure is it to deal with someone outside of ebay?

If an item on ebay is on auction and the seller offers a buy-it-now for dealing outside of ebay by just sending a bank transfer, so the seller avoids having to pay ebay costs. How secure is that?

Answers:
The worst mistake you can make

That's how ebay scammers operate -- especially if they offer wire transfer. Avoid it. Tell them to just bid on the item

If you lose out in this transaction and you send the item, you will have NO RECOURSE through ebay. Ebay will not help you because you violated the rules of off-ebay transaction
Hmmmm sounds dodgy, I personally wouldn't do it.
you aint covered by anything! It'd be the same as buying something from a street vendor, but not seeing the goods until they've disappeared with your cash... At least by using ebay you can pay via paypal and get covered.
You're technically not covered by any consumer protection laws but if they have really good feedback then it shouldn't be a problem.

You should ask them to set-up a buy it now listing for you because you'd feel more comfortable that way. If they really want the sale then they'll do it.
I've bought and sold from people that way. However, I would NEVER do anything by bank transfer - even if the deal was through ebay. Offer to pay by PayPal (my Dad recently got done for nearly £200 by bank transfer).
dont let the item go unless you have the money.its true you save as a seller on paypal costs but make sure nothing goes until money is safe in your hand or bank
a bankers draft is a really good way to transfer money if you take it to your bank they will confirm that the bankers draft is real
I wouldnt do it. Its against EBay policies probably due the fact its not secure and they cant regulate it (and they dont get their fees!) wouldnt have though you have any come back if something goes wrong.
It's not secure. The reason why ebay and PayPal exist is to make selling your stuff as safe as possible, so they don't steal your bank information and steal your life.

For the $3 they take away from your final sale, I'd just stick with ebay.
When I tried to sell something in the past, I was charged a fee based on the price I set my item at. So the seller is already being charged a price, if he sells the item through ebay or not. To me this sounds funny, and I would avoid it.
As secure or as risky as any business transaction you are doing with someone you don't know.

If somebody really wants to cheat, he can. To exclude the risk, shop in a store, the security will therefore cost you more than what you pay on Ebay.
well if the item doesn't arrive you have no way of raising a dispute, leaving feedback or getting your money back.. any decent seller would do it the right way.. I would not trust someone who wanted to complete the transaction on the side.. especially not with bank transfer.
Tell them to stop being miserable and pay their fees
DON'T do it!! I went outside of e-bay one time, and got totally scammed. Because I went outside of e-bay, I had absolutely no recourse. Why stay inside e-Bay? Because if you do, you can be fairly confident that the seller is not doing something illegal (like selling pirated software). Sellers on the 'fringe' want you to come outside of the system so they can either 1) Sell you something illegal, 2) Avoid the ebay cost (cheepo's - ebay is selling a transaction service and wants to be paid) and 3) scam you without giving you a way to get back at them.

All three things are very bad for you, so caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). JUST DON'T DO IT.
Personally I don't trust any of the sellers on eBay. They have a tendency to misrepresent the items they are selling. I would be VERY careful of what you are getting before you send this person any money, inside or outside of eBay. Hope this helps!
You shouldnt do it. How much can the fees be? To be on the safe side have them charge you an extra 5% if that is what it takes. also pay by credit card/paypal. If anything goes wrong you can report and say you never recieved the item. There has been a rise on Nigerian scams on ebay these days. They open an account, buy or sell a few items then start the scams. so beware of sellers with less then 20 feedbacks. Remember if something is too good to be true, it must be.. P.S. What real ebay sellers do is relist the item as a "buy it now", then the buyer can just pay for it then. Hope this helps you.
Avoid it like the plague, if they want to break the law to save a few dollars then they will probably surely take your money too. Don't do it, that is what paypal is for!
It is very secure for the seller, as they seller has the funds without being ripped off. However many buyers do not trust sellers who want this.
