Ltd Vs Inc within NA?

What is the norm/ usual practise of USA Company Incorporation other than LLC's, that can have a public holding.Within contiguous USA what is the legal difference between a "Limited" Company and a "Incorporation"/Inc, hence there legal,tax & Managment implications.Pro's only please.
