Are businesses in China owned by the government or are there private companies?

I keep hearing about all the new wealth in China but I thought all companies were at least in part owned by the government, so who is getting the money?

Answers:
Yes, there are private companies in China. I think McDonalds operate stores there as well as KFC and others.

The difference between our the USA and China is that China intervenes more than a free democratic government might.
I think around 1978, the Chinese Communist party passed a law that would not allow private enterprise at that time to hire more than 5 individuals. However I think the laws have relaxed there and the Chinese government is not involved as much as they once were, which might explain the economic explosion in China.

That said, the Chinese government will crack down on anything that they perceive as a threat to there well-being and power.
