HCL was founded in a garage at his house by Shiv Nadar in the late 70s/early 80s. He was educated in Electrical engineering from PSG Tech, Coimbatore and is originally from Tamil Nadu. However, he relocated to New Delhi and then on to New York to take care of HCL Technologies day to day activities.

He is incredibly popular, not just because he is a billionaire by his own right, but because he has spawned (probably) the most number of new CEOs in India.

On a personal front, he has one adopted daughter along with his wife.
