Accounting is often called "the language of business."
There are two general forms of accounting: Financial and Cost.
Financial Accounting's goal is to help investors, creditors and others assess the amounts, timings and uncertainties of future cash flows (yes, was required to memorize this for a test). What does this mean? The accountant calculates the data over previous periods which decision makers use to make their decision. It's more complicated than this, but you can cover your question over several pages of material.
Cost Accounting is a little different in that you are mainly focusing on ascertaining and improving on operational costs. This is done through overhead allocation and process costing methods.
An accounting course should be conducted in a way that the student can both understand the "why" & the "how to" when it comes to accounting. Accounting is very logical in nature but many accounting professors tend to approach accounting by the "this is the way you do it approach" which can confuse many students.

accountants keep records of accounts. basically accounting is keeping track of money coming in to and going out of an account. a course should teach you basic accounting theory (credits, debits, receivables, etc.) and teach you that you probably don't want to do this in life...
