Going through some hard times!?
Answers:
It should be easy to go from food service to retail and you would probably enjoy retail alot better. Apply at your local malls and grocery stores - becoming a cashier is an easy transition and would be less stressful than working food service.

Some temp places have test that you can take to help you figure out what you could do. If not that, go to the unemployment office they could really help you figure it out and maybe help you find something.
If you think you are living in "hard times" then getting out will even be more "hard." The first thing is to put you mind in gear and set a goal to be out of debt (stop spending would help) by a certain date.
The second thing is the return to school or take trade classes. In order the reach the goal of "being the best you can be" choose a trade you are interested. Doing a lot of walking, talking and reseach you might find someone who will foot the cost of education.
stay in food service, just find work at a better restaurant. A runner/busser at a good restaurant would be a good starting point if you like waiting tables or working with people. A runner/busser where i used to work averaged $170 per night on his tip out because he was very good, worked hard and put in extra time. All the servers loved him for it and hooked him up. The next season he came in as a server and was making over $300 a night.
Otherwise, start working in a busy kitchen as a prep cook, you'll usually end up with 12+ hours a day if you want em, and you'll go home so tired each day that you won't want to go out and spend money.
