Accounting a good major?
Answer:
Yes, pay wise it is, but you have to be willing to work with numbers all day, and not get bored with it. Public accounting, is when you do accounting for the general public, corporate- for companies, private - for clients. Hours depend on how big the company is, how many clients you have, etc.
Being an accountant is a very rewarding career. The other answer gave you good descriptions of the job titles you asked for. I think however, you should consider all the occupations in the accounting field, not just 'business services' or 'basic tax' (that's the most basic type of accountant, the one that works at your local H&R Block or similar). Why not consider being an auditor, who goes through and checks a company's financial reports. You get to see how other companies work. Or you could be a liquidator, winding up companies when they fail. Or a forensic accountant and discover who in a company is stealing money. If your not sure which department your after, its a good idea to try and get work in a firm such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers or even a large mid-tier firm in your area. That way you can try different departments.
