Being an employer I am more likely to hire the candidate that calls back within 24 hours. If you wait a week there is a good chance the position will be filled.

I also read in the Wall Street Journal that when a candidate is ready to leave and they shake the interviewers hand asking the question, " When would you like me to start" It ups the chance of being selected for the position by over 80%. It shows that you have confidence.

You can call a week after to just confirm that your Resume or Applications has been received in the proper hands. Sometimes after that, they may voluntarily tell you a time frame they may get back with you.
I would say 5 days. Sometimes being so called "pushy" is a good indication to your future employer. It shows them you are responsible and driven. So you could even call 2-3 days later.

push, how bad do you want the job. 10 minutes after you mail it call them and tell them it'ss on the way. A resume is only to get you an interview. sell yourself, peek thier interest, so a little advertising of your resume may get the interview before they get the resume.
Follow up one day after submitting your resume. If they can't give you an answer, try again two days after that. Continue following up every two days until you either get some definitive information or you get the job.
dont wait to long, normally if you dont here in the first day or 2 there either useless and take weeks to do every thing or there unsure of you, either way you dont want to work for them. i currently got a new job and i knew in the first 2 hours, thats how it should be! enjoy
The time limit for getting interview call, varies depending on the urgency or requirement of the employer to fill up a particular job vacancy for which you applied. Secondly your suitability for the position is also counts a lot.
So my suggestion is there is no harm in following it up after a week or two on getting confirmed that your resume has reached the table of the concerned person.
