How do you explain an unsteady employment history?

I have the experience, the skills but its hard to explain my history. I want to tell the truth but who wants to here that I was young and didn't know any better or I wasn't making any money anymore nor getting enough hours. I feel I have so much to offer and something like this is holding me back.

Answer:
Tell the truth - hiring managers don't like to find out about 'mistruths' later. They might think there is something else you are hiding.

Explain why you made the decision to leave.
For more education? That's a valid reason.
Because the job did not meet your expectations? Also valid.
Because you were not fairly compensated? People leave jobs all the time for money.

What did you learn from each job you left? Did you leave for the 'right reasons'? What did you later learn about each job or employer that helped you in the next job? Did you take a new job for the wrong reasons?

Describe what your contribution to each company, and try to project what your contribution and value-add to the next job will be.

You want to convince your next employer that your decision making skills (choosing which company & job, for the right reasons, etc.) have improved to the point that this next job is the best one for you and you are making a long-term commitment.

Good luck.
i was going to college ..at that time
I was going thru a divorce..
I was caring for my parents..
I was carrying for my son.

truth is better
Don't put in dates for all but the most recent 1 or 2 jobs.
Talk about not getting enough hours in a positive light.say "I enjoyed the experience but since I couldn't get enough hours, I realized that there was not a real opportunity for growth.and that's what I'm really looking for. A place where I can develop my skills and grow." Just spin it all.
I have a large resume, and great experience, but I completely understand what you are going through. My parents were divorced so I moved alot, and couldnt keep a steady job. Here is what I do, I put EVERYTHING I do on my resume, but when I go to a job interview I just select the jobs that apply towards the one that I want. This way you look like you have the experience without all of the non-relevent stuff.

GOOD LUCK!
I think a lot of people have an unsteady work history for a few reasons. They either: 1)get bored;
2)aren't making enough $$; or 3)THEY AREN'T SURE WHAT THEY WANNA DO OR WHAT THEY'RE GOOD AT!
CAN I MAKE A SUGGESTION:
TAKE AN OCCUPATIONAL ASSESSMENT TEST. THE RESULTS WILL TELL YOU WHAT JOBS YOU'RE SUITED FOR, AND HOW TO GET THE TRAINING.
People perform to a track record that is why noone wants to take a chance on you. You could be the best at what you do, but you are only as good as your dependability. Stop being so self-centered. Go to work to give all that you offer not to get what you think you deserve. It's like wanting the knowledge without studying or researching it. My suggestion is to hold on to a job for over a year without expectations. Give it your best effort always because that's who you are. People will notice and before long you will be sought for what you have to offer.
Everybody here talks a big line about telling the truth, but the reality is, alot of people lie when they feel they need to in order to get the job. How many times have you worked beside some bloke that was getting payed more than you and didn't know **?! Well you know what? If you have to bend things around a little, do it! Your competing with other people and the politics of getting noticed for what your capable of! And besides,,most bosses today seem to think it's fine if they lie to a prospective employee, but if you do it, it's unacceptable.
