Management was overheard?

At my job (retail) discussing how they would cut hours so much that people would get fed up and just quit. Business is very poor and we are very overstaffed. Why wouldn't management just be upfront and honest with the employees about this? Some people are only getting about 10 hours a week.

Answer:
1.it's too uncomfortable to make it a public issue
2.they don't want to have to pay unemployment
3.retail will always suck
sounds like poor management

if they were good they would give the hours to the best employees and weed out the poor performers(always late, moody, poor decision makers, many mistakes, etc). this would make your retail place of business better.
Because managment types don't think like normal people, not sure what it is or why, but I think it's the stick up their butt.

It's probably because they don't feel they can or want to fire anyone or deal with the confrontation that could occur in doing so. This also happens when midddle management talks to upper management and could have been told to do it this way also to avoid having to pay for any unemployment costs by letting people go.
Retail is a tough business and how goes the economy is how goes retail . Old saying in the retail business is that you are only as good as your last quarter . Look for another job cause siounds like to me they may close that store . Good luck .
