Is mailing out resumes directly to companies a good way to find a job?

Answer:
I work for Local government and in my company if you send a "blanket" resume that is not geared to a specific job that is open and available, your resume will end up in the dead letter file upon receipt. You have to respond to a specific job opening and tailor your resume to show that you meet all the qualifications of the job that are listed. Your application wuld be screened out if it didn't meet the minimum qualifications for the job you apply for.
That's actually the WORST way to find a job, because most companies will just chuck it in the trash before even reading it.
It sure can be.many companies, organizations, and especially small business who have very little options, keep these resumes on file for at least 6 months.the only thing is, you either get passed by or hired immediately
It's one good strategy, especially for finding jobs that aren't posted, but expect a meager response rate of maybe 1%. Your response rate will be much higher for jobs on monster.com, hotjobs.com, etc.
No, unsolicited resumes do not generally fare very well.
A better approach is what is known as informational interviewing. Get a name of a person working at a company you are interested in and call them. Tell them off the bat that you are not looking for them to give you a job but rather you are gathering information. Have good questions ready and be prepared to discuss them as well as yourself. At the conclusion, ask the person if they might know of someone who might be intersted in hiring someone like you. Also, ask them if you might touch base with them in a few weeks. This is called networking. If you are consisrtent in this approach, in a few weeks you can have many people assisting you with your job search. Good luck!!
If you are looking for a job, search for jobs on some of the biggest job boards like Yahoo Hotjobs,Careerbuilder and Monster. You can apply for jobs and upload your resume on these job boards. You can also search for jobs on Craigslist..Since, Craigslist allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can also search from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. More details available at http://tinyurl.com/emdyn
