Why they want mandarin to get a job?

A friend of mine really upset after she have been told that she's been rejected from getting a job because she's not proficiency in mandarin. She asked me why just don't the company just use English as it's global language even the MediaCorp itself wants mandarin..if Ch8 she's understand but others Channels why they want both English and Mandarin requirements?

Answer:
Singapore is trying to hit into China market. We are dealing more and more with China people. If you only know English, what good would that be? But a person who is biligual, it's like paying a one man's job for a two man's job. You understand? Instead of hiring one proficient in English and one in Chinese, might as well just hire one that's proficient in both?
More than half my customers are from China and HK, and they expect me to speak Chinese. I need to lias with USA and I've to speak English. What's wrong with being bilingual? Furthermore, more and more Singaporeans can't speak Chinese. I've heard kids as young as primary 3 asking his classmate to speak in English cause he don't understand Chinese, when he himself is a Chinese. Remember your roots please!
Probably because the company caters to clients who speak Mandarin. Lots of jobs out there would like bilingual employees because of the type of customers they serve. If the company serves mostly people who only speak Mandarin then they are going to want somone who speaks Mandarin.
Hi,

Since you talk about mediacorp, then it would mean that your friend is in Singapore.

Yes, being effectively billingual is important when you work in Singapore. That is partially because many singaporean companies have close relationships with companies in China, Taiwan, Hongkong and thus will require you to speak Mandarin as these countries will speak mandarin.

I used to work in Mediacorp and write for their ENGLISH website. During the interview session, we would have a mock press conference where I would pretend to be a star and one of the questions I would usually ask is "I don't understand english, can you speak mandarin" (in chinese) to test if they are billingual.

While most of our artistes can speak English, they are more comfortable in mandarin.

Do you know how many people apply for the SAME JOB EVERYDAY? If I were the boss, given a choice between someone effectively billingual and someone who is not and both have the same qualifications, I will for sure take the one who is effectively billingual. in the working world, communicaiton is ve important.

The most important thing is that if I pay the same amount and can get someone better, of cos I will choose someone better! ;)

Ask your friend not to be disheartened. She can try MTV.. or ESPN. they do not require you to speak mandarin. THere are still many jobs out there..

If she is concerned, she can always try to brush up her language.
Bilingual in Singapore is very common nowaday. If I am the employer with so many candidate to choose from, of course I will choose someone who suit my requirement. Your friend only have herself to blame for not pick up Mandarin. I supposed Mandarin is her mother tongue..it's really a disappointment if she can't even proficiency on it. Instead of putting the blame on other, shouldn't you encourage her to pick up Mandarin?
