How many weeks pay is the average severance package?

I just got laid off and I got 4 weeks, I usually hear people get three months. Can anyone give me an idea of what the average is?

Answers:
two weeks for every year you have with that employer would be normal.
It ALL depends on what your job was. Were you a real big shot? If not, 4 weeks sounds average.
Normally, the average serverance package is 4 weeks if you are middle management. If your are lower in the food chain, then it goes down to 1-2 weeks. Companies usually don't have a standard for this. It is normally at their discretion. I don't think you got jerked though, you got a pretty fair package.
Most of the ones I have seen is one week for every year of employment plus a payout of any unused vacation - unless you had an employment agreement
Each employer is different, but it is typically based on your years of service. You may want to clarify with your former company's HR Dept.

Good luck with everything.
