At what age should a student know what career he or she wants?

Answers:
i think it depends on the person--there are some people who decide they want to be doctors when they are six years old and then stick with that all through college.
then, on the other hand, there are people like me who know what they enjoy doing but don't know what kind of career they are headed for. i love writing, and i'm hoping that during college i will be able to get a little more experience and figure out exactly what i am doing.
There's no rule for this, but it is helpful in planning your courses. There are many people in their 30's, 40's and even 50's who still aren't sure what they really want to work at. As people grow and change, their interests change.

They used to say that a person will have 5 different jobs in their lifetime; now the number has increased to 10. Some people are happy doing different kinds of work all the time; others want to do the same work for their entire life.

Talk to an employment counsellor and take an interest and aptitude test. This will help you to make a decision about careers and further education.

Good luck
13 or 14.
I'd say by the time the student was a junior in high school.
Fuggedaboutit.
I didn't know until I was 25.

And who says u have to have ONE career?
why limit yourself? they are so many jobs to do. get an education and then enjoy all that the world has to offer.
Hmm?! Some people never know what they want to do. I went thru so many phases and had so many different interests that I cant count.
I persued achitecture, music, machanix, machining, and now I'm a Realtor/Loan Officer...the fact is you never know where you're gonna end up, heck i'll probably change again...except I make really good money so it'll be a while...;0)
A student needs to start looking at their career goals by the time they enter high school because they need to focus these years of study in the direction that will form the base fundamental education requirements in achieving their goals.
There are numerous factors that often changes one focus on a particular career, marriage, economical factors (affordability), difficulty of subject matter can not be over come, length of education becomes unacceptable, and etc.
Very occasionally, someone knows what they want to do when they're in junior high or even earlier. Many of these people, by the way, end up changing somewhere along the line even though they were absolutely sure.

If you have a good idea what direction you want to go pretty early in college, it's helpful, since that way you can tailor your college courses to your future career. But lots of people don't really decide until late college, or even afterwards.

If you're 30 and still don't have a direction in mind, it can be helpful to get career counseling. This would entail a series of tests, both academic type and also personality, to help point you in a direction.

But if you're 16 or something, and worried that you don't have your life mapped out, QUIT WORRYING, YOU'RE WAY TOO YOUNG TO WORRY.
