How do I become a longshoreman(woman)?
Answer:
They had a big hiring in California for longshoreman about a 2 years ago. It was announced state wide and everybody applied. They claimed they hired some from the cards that applied.
Most of the hires came from workers who already were there.
Each worker had a card that was given to a family member or friend. Most of these people were hired and now work part time.
It is very difficult to get in the ILWU union. They just had a big hiring frenzy about a year ago of about17,000 new part-time casuals in which they draw names out of the poscards that were mailed in for the lottery drawing and according to what sequence number your name was drawn,. Then theres a few test that you must pass. (strength, agility, and pass a pysical and drug test., then attend a safety class.) In 1997 they mailed out applications and gave out a certain amount of them at the unemployment office If you knew someone or had a relative your chances of getting in at that time were somewhat better, There is still the long process of the casual hall which is when there is an overflow of work at the big hall which are they that have made there hours and have been elevated to a class B longshorman. Your still not safe once you make you hours as a class B without any trouble, then you are safe as a class 'A' longshorewoman for life. There is a benefit to the longshoreman if they were to pass away before they retire or before they are the age of 65 yrs old that the widowed spouse choose a child to take his longshoremand book, in other words that child over 18 becomes a longshoreman immediately. within the 30 days from his death. It is a sad way of getting in. Thats how I became a longshorewoman, well, There still is a chance. Rumor has it that after the contract of 2008. they will be hiring again in 2009. Thats if that rumor is true. Or you can become a professional in refers or mechanics and wait 7 to 10 years if you work for one of the employers (MTC, APL, SSA, ect ), that is called the back door option. hope that helped. keep your ears open and keep asking questions.
